About the Project: EyesOpenIowa ensures that Iowa’s teens have access to the information and services they need to make healthy, informed, and empowered decisions about sex and relationships, both now and in the future.  This organization now offers a refreshed AskTxTina website that provides youth comprehensive sex education answers from a professional educator.  The site has been improved to be easier to navigate and has been especially improved for mobile phones.

Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children

Nonprofit Organization: Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children (Iowa AEYC)

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: To ensure that Iowa’s youngest children have a high quality early learning experience, the Iowa Association for the Education of Young Children (Iowa AEYC) determined the state’s early childhood workforce needed an easily accessible, interactive platform to inform them about mandatory training requirements, formal education opportunities, and how to move forward on a career pathway in early care and education.

Iowa Public Radio

Nonprofit Organization: Iowa Public Radio

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: Iowa Public Radio informs, enriches and engages Iowans through high quality news and cultural programming. As a result of the 2016 hackathon, listeners of IPR are now able to purchase premium items, like coffee cups and t-shirts, in an online store. Previously these items have only been available through IPR during its fund drives. IPR is one of the first public radio broadcasters nationally to provide this service.

Roosevelt Cultural District

Nonprofit Organization: Roosevelt Cultural District

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: The Roosevelt Cultural District is a certified cultural district and a hub for fine cuisine, artistic expression, history, education, community gathering, and play located within a one-square mile area along 42nd Street in Des Moines. While so many local residents enjoy visiting businesses and events in this area, the district did not have a website highlighting its amenities and proposed streetscape project until now. The new site highlights all the incredible products, services, and amenities available in this special district.

Yoga for First Responders

Nonprofit Organization: Yoga for First Responders (YFFR)

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: Yoga for First Responders (YFFR) has a mission of bringing yoga philosophy, through somatic and cognitive exercises, to practical applications for first responders around the country. During the 2016 hackathon, YFFR and its project team created a new website that will allow the organization’s nationwide audience to access its online training and other resources.

The Youth Tribe

Nonprofit Organization: The Youth Tribe

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: The Youth Tribe is a newly formed, Des Moines based nonprofit looking to involve youth in healthy living choices through endurance athletics by supporting programming in schools and communities, including triathlon activities. During the 2016 hackathon, the Youth Tribe and its project team created a web app that allows young people to track their triathlon training progress and earn incentives as they make progress.

Des Moines Bicycle Collective

Nonprofit Organization: The Des Moines Bicycle Collective

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: The Des Moines Bicycle Collective promotes bicycling as a means of active transportation, wellness, and recreation in Central Iowa. During the 2016 hackathon, the Bike Collective digitized its popular bike month passport, which encourages area residents to attend bike-oriented events and try active transportation during the month of May.

This project is no longer live as it has since concluded. 


Des Moines Public Schools

Nonprofit Organization: Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS)

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: The Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) exist so that students graduate with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful at the next stage of their lives. During the 2016 hackathon, the Schools received a new website highlighting volunteer opportunities available to district high school students interested in pursuing the humanitarian/silver cord at graduation.  In addition, their project team provided them with an online tracking system that can log and report on students’ volunteer service.

Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation

Nonprofit Organization: Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation

Hackathon Year: 2016

About the Project: Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation implements the $45 million Master Plan created for Water Works Park. To help highlight the amenities in the park, the Foundation worked with its project team to create an innovative interactive map highlighting popular attractions in the park. In fact, the map is part of an entirely rebuilt website created during the 2016 hackathon.

Moving Forward: Since 2016, the Des Moines Water Works Park Foundation has been able to continue to update their website, and has grown beyond the site built by their hackathon team. You can visit their new site at www.dsmwaterworkspark.com
