dsmHack 2017

Date: March 2-4, 2017

Location: Gravitate, Downtown Des Moines

We thought our 2016 hack was big – but 2017 knocked it out of the park. With 37 applications from 33 organizations, our selection process wasn’t easy, but we narrowed it down to 10 nonprofit organizations. Projects included new websites, databases, eCommerce sites, branding, and even a digital brain, created for a variety of nonprofit causes.

Our 2017 selected nonprofits included:

About the 2017 Hack

The hack event kicked off Thursday evening with a brief explanation from each charity outlining their technology need. Participants then met with charity representatives, choose a project they felt drawn to, and immediately started working on problem solving. Work continued throughout the evening and into Friday and Saturday, concluding with a presentation of projects at 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening.

Our favorite thing about dsmHack is how local nonprofits and tech pros come together, break down technology barriers, and leave everyone – both nonprofits and individuals – better than they were when they walked in the door. Highlights of this year included a field trip to one of our organization’s ribbon cuttings, and a camp song enthusiastically (or maybe not so much) received by all of our attendees.

Just the numbers:

  • $165,000 in-kind tech services
  • 10 nonprofits
  • >85 developers, designers, and innovators
  • 100+ visits from supporters
