Giving Tuesday with the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
We know that the holiday season is busy for so many, but also allows for time to pause and reflect on all that has happened throughout the year and consider ways to give back and uplift the local community. Following Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Small Business Saturday - Giving Tuesday provides that opportunity.
Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines
The Community Foundation began in 1969 with a critical component of its mission to connect donors with causes they care about. As an organization that’s always innovating, they began to think, how do we bring our skill sets as community connectors online to reach more people? In 2018, dsmHack became a partner when the Community Foundation was selected with a project for the annual hack-a-thon.
GIVEdsm
GIVEdsm is a technology solution that was created to help donors and community members find the causes that best match their passion. When using the platform, you can select your areas of interest and see profiles of available projects and organizations. Each profile provides the opportunity to learn more, then grant directly from your Community Foundation charitable giving fund or give directly to the central Iowa organization. This is local impact made easy!
Thanks to a talented, future-forward team, GIVEdsm is now in its second iteration and has evolved into a resource that community foundations around the country wish they had.
If you are a local nonprofit interested in posting to GIVEdsm, please contact Sara Bonney for login details. Once approved, you will simply complete a project form that asks the name of the project for which you are seeking support, a description of what you have planned, a photo, a funding goal, and a date by which the money needs to be raised. The team will use this information to create an interactive profile and help you make connections that count.
Project ideas can include:
- Timely need (ex. the heater went out)
- Ongoing need / General operating support
- Capital Campaign
